This is the last night I’ll spend in my own home for a long time.
Tomorrow I’ll embark on what will be the most difficult physical and psychological challenge I’ve undertaken to date - the ‘Henro’ Pilgrimage of Shikoku Island in Japan.
Tomorrow I’ll take a train to Kagawa prefecture, and spend the night in a hotel next to the 1st temple. On Sunday morning I’ll wake up early, eat breakfast, and begin the longest walk of my life.
Despite months of research and constant preparation for the past few weeks, due to the size of this endeavor my mind has yet to grasp it completely.
I do not feel anxious, excited, or nervous. OK, maybe a little nervous - but more like daunted.
Mostly I feel a sense of acceptance, the way I imagine a centenarian would accept death.
I feel a Quiet - casting a sorrowful, lingering gaze over the past decade of my life, and simultaneously drawing up the courage to raise that gaze to meet the incoming torrent of experiences which will ultimately shape what will become the next decade.
